Newington Conservation Commission Adopts GIS Wetlands Tool, Joins Land Council

Conservation · Meeting of July 24, 2026

Newington's Conservation Commission adopted a supplementary GIS wetlands mapping tool and voted to join the Connecticut Land Conservation Council at its July 21 meeting. Both votes were unanimous; the GIS adoption motion included explicit language that the new tool "does not replace the current inland wetland boundaries for the town of Newington," added after Commissioner Conway raised concerns that the mapping product was overzealous and showed wetlands in the middle of developed neighborhoods. The council membership carries a $100 annual fee, which falls within the commission's existing budget.

Council Liaison Gail briefed commissioners on a Town Council vote to send a $7.8 million firehouse demolition and rebuild project to November referendum, and confirmed that Town Manager Matt Ford has formally resigned and is expected to depart in late September under a 45-day notice requirement. The meeting's sharpest exchange came when staff agent Chris said he had been directed by his supervisor not to discuss a conservation easement violation at the Marquette property; Chairman Zellick replied that the town manager's office "doesn't tell us what we can and cannot talk about," though the commission agreed to await a Friday site walk before taking further action on an issue involving more than 100 tons of material deposited on a protected easement area.
