Newington Subcommittee Launches Review Targeting Inactive and Duplicative Town Boards
Other Committee · Meeting of July 24, 2026
Newington launches structured review of town boards and commissions, targeting inactive and duplicative bodies. The newly formed Town Council Boards and Commissions Review Subcommittee held its inaugural meeting July 24, electing Councillor Tanyakis as chair and unanimously adopting a six-meeting schedule running through November 16. The three-member panel, also including Councillors DeHaas and Ratta, was established by Town Council Resolution 2026-12 in February and is charged with recommending consolidation or elimination of inactive or duplicative boards.
A town staff member identified only as James briefed the subcommittee on the scope of the project, noting that roughly 20 already-disbanded committees remain publicly listed on the town website alongside active ones. The group agreed to prioritize resolution-created bodies, which require only a council vote to dissolve, and flagged the Newington Housing Needs Study Committee, created in 2014 and never formally disbanded, as a leading example of the problem. Staff will return at the August 3 meeting with a compiled resolution list to begin formal action.
