Newington Human Rights Commission targets July event focused on basic community needs

Other Committee · Meeting of January 27, 2026

Newington's Human Rights Commission confirmed its leadership and began planning a July community resource event at Mill Pond Park. At the January 27 meeting, the commission confirmed Lucas as chair and Katie as secretary, then spent the bulk of the session organizing a summer event in partnership with Parks and Recreation, tentatively set for July 23, built around a "basic needs" theme covering food insecurity, housing rights, health and dental screenings, children's activities, and a planting wellness component. Members divided research tasks ahead of the March meeting, with one member taking housing resources, including Fair Rent Commission information, another taking medical and dental outreach, and Jamella handling food insecurity contacts through a connection to the Connecticut state commission on women, equity and opportunity.

The commission separately reported that its holiday assistance programs served 410 households and close to 1,000 individuals this season, roughly 15 percent above last year's totals.
